The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is for adults at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Up to 33% of adults in our community may have prediabetes.

Since diabetes has no cure, lifestyle change is necessary to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. The Y is here to help!

What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be considered diabetic. People who have diabetes may not show any symptoms. It is estimated that 86 million Americans 20 years and older have prediabetes.

It Works!

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program and we use a curriculum approved by the CDC. Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58% and 71% in adults over age 60.

The program lasts one year and is delivered over 25 sessions in a group setting of up to 15 participants. Each session will be facilitated by a trained lifestyle coach. The lifestyle coach is there to help facilitation of conversation amongst the group, not to be a health expert.

The goals of the program are for each participant to attain moderate weight loss of 5% - 7% of their body weight and to increase their physical activity to at least 150 minutes weekly. We will reach these goals by making necessary lifestyle changes. Participants are held personally accountable for their progress as they will track their physical activity and caloric intake. Each class session will begin with a weigh-in along with a collection of food and activity trackers.

When and Where?

Classes are held at the Pav YMCA located at 2947 S. Oak Park Avenue, Berwyn, IL 60402. Register for the class at our front desk. Take a look at our program brochure for days and times.

What People are Saying:

200x200-diabetes-participant-1“I knew all the stats, I had all the right information, and I knew that I was at high risk, but I was not ready to commit to changing my life until I learned about this program. The small group component is what sold me. I really liked the idea of accountability. The group connection and accountability, for me, were the biggest piece. At age 50, I’ve lost 20 percent of my starting weight and now, at 142 pounds, I’m back to the size I was in college.” —Laura, program participant

200x200-diabetes-participant-2“When I started this program, I barely had the energy I needed with three kids. I tried quick, fad diets but they didn’t work. I’d lose weight and then I'd gain it back. But this program is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change. I loved the wealth of information I learned and I couldn’t wait to share it with my family. Our life has changed. I’ve lost 38 pounds, my husband lost 20, and my sons are requesting berry smoothies for dessert. My energy is through the roof and my family is living healthier.” —Wendy, program participant
