The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is for adults at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Up to 33% of adults in our community may have prediabetes.

Since diabetes has no cure, lifestyle change is necessary to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. The Y is here to help!

What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be considered diabetic. People who have diabetes may not show any symptoms. It is estimated that 86 million Americans 20 years and older have prediabetes.

About The Program

Who can participate? Adults 18+, who are:

  • At risk for, or diagnosed with prediabetes via
  • Fasting Glucose between 100-125 mg/dl
  • 2-hour Plasma Glucose between 140-199 mg/dl
  • A1c between 5.7% and 6.4%.
  • Previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes
  • If blood test is not available, a qualifying risk score on a combination of risk factors
  • Only individuals with PREDIABETES qualify to participate; it is designed to prevent diabetes.

It Works!

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program and we use a curriculum approved by the CDC. Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58% and 71% in adults over age 60.

Overview

The program lasts one year and is delivered over 25 sessions in a group setting of up to 15 participants. Each session will be facilitated by a trained lifestyle coach. The lifestyle coach is there to help facilitation of conversation amongst the group, not to be a health expert.

Goals

The goals of the program are for each participant to attain moderate weight loss of 5% - 7% of their body weight and to increase their physical activity to at least 150 minutes weekly. We will reach these goals by making necessary lifestyle changes. Participants are held personally accountable for their progress as they will track their physical activity and caloric intake. Each class session will begin with a weigh-in along with a collection of food and activity trackers.
