About the Teeter Award Celebration
Our Teeter Award Celebration is an annual event in May that honors community figures for a lifetime of volunteer work.
This year’s Teeter Award Celebration will be held on Friday, May 12th at 6 pm at Skylite West Banquets in Berwyn.
Since 1977, the Pav YMCA honors the memory of Berwyn resident Robert W. Teeter every year.
The Robert W. Teeter Award is named after a former, long-time resident of South Berwyn with an illustrious record of service in both Cicero and Berwyn. A former teacher at Morton East High School, Teeter founded the West Suburban Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 1921. He was also affiliated with the Illinois State Hospital for Handicapped Children. Mr. Teeter also served as:
- Secretary of the Berwyn Park Commission
- a member of the board of a large Cicero Bank, and
- the first president of the Berwyn Kiwanis Club.
In fact, he was the composer of the National Kiwanis song. Throughout his career, he was also connected to the Chicago YMCA.
In memory of Bob Teeter, we recognize one outstanding community leader as the recipient of the Robert W. Teeter Award each year.

2018 Teeter Award Winner
The Pav YMCA honors long time Berwyn resident, Lucile Evans, as the
2018 Teeter Award recipient. Lucile has been an important and
integral part of Berwyn her entire life. She has been present at nearly
every important Berwyn milestone, including when the famous
Burlington Zephyr train sped through Berwyn.
Mrs. Evans was part of the committee that successfully
acquired the land that the YMCA now stands on after the infamous
lumber yard disaster. She worked tirelessly with the group that raised
enough funds to outbid other interested parties and became one of
the founding members of the first YMCA board. She has always
remained one of the YMCA’s most vocal and loyal boosters.
Throughout the years, Lucile has been a steadfast supporter and
unofficial ambassador of the goodwill for Berwyn. She is unwavering in
her love of all things Berwyn and can still be found at every function,
large or small supporting our schools, parks, fire and police
departments, neighborhood activities, Church Socials, and more. Her
involvement is legendary and endless. For these and so many other
reasons, the Pav YMCA is honored to recognize Lucile for all she has
done for our community.
